The cornet is a brass instrument pitched in the
key of Bb. BMC carries many different
brands of cornets, including Yamaha, Bach, and Holton. The cornet is often confused with the
trumpet, but they are different instruments.
The trumpet has cylindrical tubing in which the bore remains a
consistent size until reaching the bell.
The tubing on a cornet increases in diameter as the overall length
increases – this is called conical tubing.
The tubing on the cornet is also more tightly wound than on the trumpet,
giving the cornet a mellower tone, similar to that of a flugelhorn. Check out the Conn 34A, a very popular model
cornet with a shepherd’s crook design.
When purchasing a cornet, please keep in mind that the instrument is
more common in Europe, and is usually used only in orchestral settings in
America. Please speak to one of the
experts at BMC, who can help you decide if the cornet is right for you!
