First Oboes & Bassoons

A beginner oboe is designed to be easily playable by a young student. Starter oboes are typically very basic, usually without left F, low Bb, and other key work. Though slightly more expensive, some student oboes offer a simplified conservatory key system, which includes the basics of a full conservatory system oboe. These oboes tend to be preferred since the student has more complex fingerings available to them. A student oboe should be made of plastic, resin, or wood. Resin oboes or plastic oboes are generally durable and can be played for several years. Wooden oboes tend to be more appropriate oboes for the intermediate player, since they should not be used outdoors and require slightly more care. Although some band directors and private music teachers will allow a student to play bassoon as a beginning instrument, most students will start with oboe, then move on to the bassoon. Student bassoons are usually made of plastic or resonite, but can occasionally be made of wood. Look for a bassoon with kid leather pads for durability, and Heckel system keys.

Step-Up Oboes & Bassoons

Intermediate model oboes are generally made of wood, but occasionally are made of resin. Upper level oboes are often Grenadilla wood oboes, which feature a clear, clean tone. Step-up oboes generally include more advanced keys such as left F, low Bb, B natural-C# articulation, and F resonance keys, made of silver-plated nickel silver. This is called a modified conservatory oboe, which will suit most oboe players through the high school level. A step-up bassoon is usually made of hard maple or resonite. Intermediate bassoons also feature Heckel system keys and 2 bocals.

Professional Oboes and Bassoons

Professional oboes are an investment in tone quality. A pro oboe should be made of Grenadilla wood, and have a slightly narrower bore than a student oboe or step-up oboe. All upper level oboes should have a full conservatory key system. Some professional level oboes include an ebonite lining of the interior. There are many custom options available for oboes, please speak to one of our experts! A professional bassoon should be made of hard maple or rosewood. Look for a rich sound that allows for the most subtle tone shadings. Pro bassoons, like upper level oboes, tend to offer many custom options, please call and speak to one of our experts!

"Both of my children took instrumental lessons at BMC. We have been customers for many years and always receive warm, courteous, and knowledgeable service!" -Sandra, customer

"I love my flute teacher. There couldn't be a better match for me personally. All of the staff are really nice and helpful, whether I'm ordering a special Christmas ornament or a music book. It's just an overall comfortable place to be." -Lynn, adult student

"I do want to say that throughout the years working with BMC, EVERYONE I have dealt with has been the friendliest and most cooperative business person I could hope to meet. Thank you one and all for your positive outlook on all things musical!" -- Sue Cryan, Music Educator, Hartford CT

"I have found Bethel Music to be tops in repairs and service. I have worked with them for over 14 years. Great service and quality equipment." --Tom Miner, Band Director, Stamford CT

"For many years our New Fairfield instrumental students have enjoyed the fair prices, good instrument advise, in-house quality repairs and full pick-up & delivery service that Bethel Music Center provides. I especially like the Buy-Back program!" -- Diane King, Band Director, New Fairfield CT

"Bethel Music Center has become my life line in my teaching career here at Khartoum International Community School in Sudan. The friendly advice and quick service both in instrument repairs and book ordering has been a big help in keeping my music department functioning in a city and country where these resources simply are impossible to find locally. A recent example of this service was with an alto sax band book that I had forgotten to order in a very large book order. In desperation, I sent an emergency email to see if it could be sent electronically. The mail system here is not reliable or trustworthy enough to send items. Within a couple of days it was sent and the band could continue! Of course, I have purchased the books by credit card but this added flexible service has helped to keep my band program functioning. Well done!!" -- Robert Denzel; Music Teacher; Khartoum, Sudan

"Sofia LOVED the music lesson - Bruce taught the lesson (we heard he is one of the resident brass teachers!) and Sofia was SO happy when I picked her up. She says that the french horn is the best brass instrument now. Thanks for everything again - it has been a really good day for us because of you all at BMC!" -Kelly C. customer
