Most students begin playing the French Horn on a Student Single French Horn. Beginner Horns are made out of brass, with rotor valves and bearings that are tapered. Most starter French Horns are in the key of F, while other introductory French Horns are in the key of Bb. Single French Horns and other First French Horns allow for easier execution of notes due to the smaller taper in the mouthpipe, and short-stroke rotary valve action.

When a French Horn player is able to easily produce notes in the upper and lower registers and is able to support additional weight, they may be ready for a Step-Up Double French Horn. Intermediate French Horns are called Double French Horns because they have two sets of tubing that allows for switching between the key of F and the key of Bb. The step-up French Horn accomplishes the key change using 4 rotary valves, the 4th rotor valve being operated by the thumb. Many band directors prefer the 4-Valve Intermediate Double French Horns. Upper-level French Horns and Double French Horns are made with upgraded materials such as Yellow Brass, Silver-Plated Yellow Brass and Nickel-Silver slides. Some Step-Up French Horns feature a detachable bell for additional ease for storage and transportation.

Professional Double French Horns, when properly crafted, are a work of art. Pro French Horns have two different types of wraps. Kruspe Style and Geyer Style. Both wraps have the 4th rotary valve, however, differ in their placements on the Professional Horn. Kruspe Style Professional Double French Horns have the 4th rotor located adjacent to the 1st finger rotary valve. Geyer Style Professional Double French Horns have the 4th rotor located adjacent to the 3rd rotary valve instead of the 1st rotor. Professional French Horns are made with upgraded materials for better tonal production and projection. Yellow brass is used for producing a clear, full and rich sound. This is the most common brass used. Rose Brass is used to offer a much warmer tone than Yellow Brass. Gold Brass is used for those who prefer a compromise between Rose Brass and Yellow Brass. Many Pro Double French Horns are silver-plated for additional tonal coloration. Professional Double French Horns have a large bell flare, which is harder to control, but produces a thicker, darker and warmer sound.
